Company: Small, no structure and minimal HR practices in place
Issue: Complacent employee; lack of proactive management resulting in a timely and costly process to achieve the desired result.
The Company had little or no:
- Internal processes
- Employment documents as required in law
- Compliant HR documents
Considerations & Limitations
This small company with less than 20 employees had, historically, not experienced any significant HR issues. The internal business processes were generally verbal and informal rather than documented and embedded in the company. The company had no budget for HR or dealing with employment matters.
Having managed the removal of an employee from the business which had taken a longer period of time than desired by the Owner, and had cost considerably more than expected, the Owner realised that whilst he had been lucky not to have had any previous HR issues, his lack of interest and focus on employees and employment had actually come back and ‘bitten him on the ankles’.
The Owner invested in a complete overhaul of what little HR documents and processes he had in place. This resulted in legally compliant documents and pro-active processes and procedures, which provided him with complete control of his workforce; it provided for boundaries, standards of performance and consequences.
The results: Over a short period of 3 months, the Owner was pleased to see an increase in production, customer satisfaction and employee engagement. Having realised the value of HR and how it had added to his business, the Owner now has a HR budget.
